Our March visit was a brief but bright experience, where the stark white landscape met a brilliant morning sky. It is a park that invites you to play, whether you are hiking the ridges or sledding down the slopes.

🥾 The Journey
Our trip to White Sands required an early start from the Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU. We wanted to spend the morning on the dunes before continuing our drive north to Santa Fe. The journey offered an unexpected perspective on the park's location within a military range.
The Unexpected Stop: As we drove toward the park, traffic on the highway was stopped due to missile testing at the adjacent White Sands Missile Range. While the delay could have been a setback, it turned out to be a gift. We found ourselves sitting on the highway just as the sun began to crest the horizon, catching a spectacular sunrise over the desert floor that we might have missed otherwise.

Dunes and Discoveries: Once the road reopened, we headed straight to the Dune Life Nature Trail. This short hike is a great way to see the shifting dune environment. Afterward, we drove further into the heart of the dunes to participate in the park’s most popular pastime: sledding. We spent the rest of the morning sliding down the steep faces of the gypsum drifts. It was an absolute blast, though we quickly learned that gypsum sand is incredibly fine. We were finding small reminders of those dunes in our car and clothing for months afterward.

The Sunrise Stop: If you are lucky (or unlucky) enough to be stopped for missile testing, take the time to look at the sky. The wide-open basin offers some of the best horizon views in New Mexico.

Dunes Drive: This 8-mile scenic drive takes you deep into the heart of the white sands, where the road itself is plowed out of the gypsum.
The High Ridges: Walking just a few hundred yards away from the parking areas allows you to find untouched "waves" of sand that look like a frozen ocean.

Lodging: Courtyard by Marriott Las Cruces at NMSU. A reliable and comfortable home base for an early morning departure.
Food: There are no food services inside the park. We grabbed coffee and breakfast in Las Cruces before heading out.
Park Access: Check the park website for scheduled road closures. Because of the missile range, Highway 70 and the park itself can be closed for several hours at a time.

Sledding Strategy: Bring along plastic waxed sleds. If you want to save a few dollars, check with your hotel or local thrift stores to see if any have been left behind by previous travelers.
Check the Wind: In the high desert, wind can pick up quickly. On a windy day, the gypsum sand can feel like sandpaper on your skin, so check the forecast before you plan your day.
The Sand Stays: Be prepared for the "White Sands Souvenir." The fine white powder gets into every zipper, shoe, and floor mat. Have a dedicated bag for your sleds and sandy gear to keep the rest of your car clean.
