Florida is known for its theme parks and beaches, but if you're looking for a unique local adventure, let me tell you about our recent trip to Crystal River! This charming town on the Gulf Coast offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and small-town charm.
🗓️ First Friday in Crystal River
Our adventure began on the first Friday of December, perfectly timed for Crystal River's monthly First Friday festivities, which in December includes their annual Christmas tree lighting. Vendors lined the streets, and music filled the air, creating a festive holiday atmosphere. We didn’t stay for the tree lighting, but we did get a glimpse of Santa Claus and purchased a manatee ornament for our tree.

🍽️ A Taste of the Bayou at Dinner
Our Friday night dinner was at a local Cajun restaurant, the Seafood Seller Café. If you love fresh seafood with a spicy, Louisiana kick, this is the place to be. The menu was full of mouth-watering options. From the blue crab claws and grouper nuggets as appetizers to the crawfish étouffée, the Seafood Seller provided a delicious and satisfying meal. The beignets were pretty good too!
🤿 Snorkeling with Gentle Giants: Unforgettable Encounters
The main event that draws people to Crystal River is the incredible opportunity to interact with manatees, the gentle giants of the sea! Staying at the Plantation Inn makes this adventure seamless, as the Adventure Center for manatee tours is right on site.
We woke up bright and early and headed down to the center. They provided all the necessary gear (wetsuits, masks, snorkels, a pool noodle) and a quick, essential briefing on how to safely and respectfully interact with these protected animals in the springs of Kings Bay.
Adventure Tip: Remember that you are a guest in the manatees' habitat. Follow the guide's and the captain’s instructions to ensure a safe and ethical interaction for both you and the manatees!
Floating in the clear, cool spring water and having a curious manatee slowly glide right past you is truly an amazing experience. A great time to see them is in the winter months when they huddle together in the warmer spring water. This is an incredible adventure that connects you directly to the wildness of Florida.
Our manatee adventure was split into two distinct, unforgettable encounters:
The Bump-and-Nuzzle Encounter: Our first stop was near a sanctuary site in King’s Bay that was absolutely packed with manatees that we could not see in the murky waters. It was an incredibly "up close and personal" experience. You literally could not see the manatees until they were right next to you! We would be floating along and then suddenly, a gentle bump against our side, or a whiskered face would suddenly appear inches from our masks. It was a truly wild encounter, and in that moment, we fully understood why our guide and captain repeatedly advised that manatees are extremely curious.

Clarity at Three Sisters Springs: The second snorkel took us to the breathtaking Three Sisters Springs, the jewel of Crystal River. Here, the water clarity was phenomenal. It was like swimming in a massive, shimmering aquarium! We were able to float quietly and watch the manatees in their entirety—huge, graceful forms gliding, rolling, and swimming past us in the bright blue spring. This experience gave us a deeper appreciation for their size and serenity.

⛱️ Lunch on the Water
After emerging, tired but exhilarated, from the water, we grabbed a well-deserved bite at Crumps Landing. This popular waterfront spot has a great view and the perfect casual atmosphere to recount our amazing manatee encounters over a delicious lunch of peel-and-eat shrimp, chowder, and shrimp tacos. It was the perfect place to grab a few drinks and refuel while watching the boats pass by!

🎄 Festive Nature Walk
After lunch, we took a short drive to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. This park is home to a permanent collection of native Florida wildlife, including flamingos, pelicans, egrets, panthers, bears, and, of course, manatees (who live in the park’s warm spring year-round). Because it was December, the park was decorated for the holidays, adding an extra festive touch to our nature walk.
Note that there are two entrances, the Main Visitor Center and the West Entrance. There is a boat and a tram that travel between the entrances, or you can walk.

🍰 Dinner at Waterfront Social
For our final evening, we opted for a casual meal at Waterfront Social. Though we arrived after dark and missed out on the sunset views, the food hit the spot. We enjoyed blackened grouper nuggets, a fresh salad, and a hearty smash burger. However, the real highlight of the meal was the Reese's Pie. It sweet ending to conclude our weekend adventures.
🍳 Final Bite at The Biscuit Barn
As we drove out of town, we made one last essential stop, The Biscuit Barn, for breakfast. We were immediately won over by their commitment to the breakfast side dish dilemma! Not only do they offer hearty meals, but they also give you the choice between classic grits, savory home fries, crispy hash browns, or a hash brown patty. It was the perfect, comforting send-off to our Crystal River adventure.
🛏️ Southern Charm at the Plantation Inn
We stayed at the Plantation Inn on Crystal River, nestled on the waterfront. This place is a story of Florida resilience. Having recently reopened after recovering from damage caused by Hurricane Helene, they have done a beautiful job maintaining its historic charm while refreshing the spaces. The Plantation Inn provides a cozy retreat after a busy day, and an ideal base camp for a Crystal River adventure!
My favorite feature on the property is the Manatee Water Fountain; it adds a wonderful, whimsical touch! Even if you choose to stay elsewhere, stop by to see the fountain.
