Description: An itinerary management app that automatically compiles travel confirmation emails into a single, comprehensive, sequential master itinerary.
Why I use it: This is my all-time favorite organizational tool. I forward all my booking emails (flights, hotels, rental cars, activities), and TripIt builds a perfect itinerary that I can access instantly and offline. It's truly like having a personal travel agent. I also appreciate the travel statistics tracking, including the number of miles flown and the number of days on the road.

Description: Google's cloud-based spreadsheet program that enables users to create, edit, and collaborate on documents from any device.
Why I use it: Nothing beats a spreadsheet for developing a detailed itinerary. I use it to create collaborative spreadsheets for trip planning, capturing destinations, number of nights at destination, flights or other transportation, accommodations, confirmation numbers, activities/experiences, and restaurants. Using Google Sheets is a must for any multi-destination trip. We’ve also used Google Sheets for creating a shared packing list for long road trips to remote areas, where access to food may be limited.

Why I use it: Say goodbye to overpacking or forgetting essentials! I’ve become so dependent on the Packr app that I use it for overnight trips. And with the weather forecast feature, you know if you need to pack that extra jacket or not!

Why I use it: I use it for general lodging searches that include guest reviews of the properties. The app has extensive filter options to find the perfect mix of location, amenities, and price for accommodations. The Genius loyalty program often provides extra discounts and perks, such as upgrades. Note: I always check the price difference booking directly vs. booking.com

Description: The official app for the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, used for booking and managing reservations across Bonvoy brands (Luxury Collection, Autograph Collection, Westin, Sheraton, Residence Inn, Springhill Suites).
Why I use it: As a Bonvoy Platinum member, this app is essential for booking and managing reservations at Bonvoy properties. This app is also used for check-in, digital keys, accessing amenities, requesting services, and managing loyalty points.

Description: The official app for the Hilton Honors loyalty program, used for booking and managing reservations across Hilton brands (Waldorf Astoria, Embassy Suites, and Hampton).
Why I use it: Similar to Bonvoy, as a Hilton Honors member, this app is essential for booking and managing reservations at Hilton properties. This app is also used for check-in, digital keys, accessing amenities, requesting services, and managing loyalty points.

Description: The official mobile application for the United Airlines carrier, used for flight management, check-in, and boarding.
Why I use it: As United is my preferred airline, this is my go-to airline app. It’s crucial for booking flights, checking in, getting a mobile boarding pass, tracking flight status in real-time, changing seats, and monitoring any potential delays or gate changes. Note: If I am flying another airline, I will download and use that airline’s app.

Why I use it: Google Maps is the undisputed champion for getting around. I use it to plan travel routes for navigating a city or traveling between destinations. The ability to download massive regional maps for offline use is a lifesaver when there is no cell service or when you want to save precious international data.
Google Maps can be used to save accommodations, attractions, sites, and restaurants, as places I want to go or places I have been. This provides a visual for planning purposes, such as determining the area for accommodation bookings that are closest to the attractions or restaurants I want to visit, as well as a reference to where I have been for future blogging.

Description: A planning tool that focuses on mapping out driving routes while helping users discover unique roadside attractions and points of interest along the way.
Why I use it: When traveling by car, this is my favorite app for discovering the unique stops and hidden gems that a standard GPS, including Google Maps, may miss—quirky museums, scenic overlooks, and classic diners. This is how I found Carhenge in Nebraska and the Potato Museum in Idaho.

Category: Ride-Sharing / Local Transit
Description: A platform that connects passengers with drivers for on-demand transportation services in cities worldwide.
Why I use it: This app provides a reliable way to get safe, consistent, and upfront-priced transportation in cities globally. It saves me from haggling with local taxis and allows for cashless payment in my home currency, even when my ride is in a foreign country. Note: In the United States and Canada, Lyft is a similar option. And not all countries have Uber. For example, in Singapore, Grab is the go-to app for on-demand transportation services. Some research on transportation options may be required for countries that do not have Uber.

Description: A popular foreign exchange tool and global money transfer service, known for providing accurate, real-time mid-market rates.
Why I use it: Essential for budgeting abroad. This app provides quick, reliable currency conversions and, most importantly, works offline using the last updated exchange rates, so I can instantly check prices even when I'm away from Wi-Fi.

Description: A financial app designed to track shared expenses among groups and automatically calculate who owes whom money.
Why I use it: Essential for group travel! It eliminates the headache of tracking every ride, coffee, and dinner. It automatically handles all the complex math and simplifies the final settlement of money among friends at the end of a trip.

Description: A multilingual translation service that offers text, voice, image, and handwritten translations between languages.
Why I use it: This is a vital tool for international travel. I love using the Camera Mode to instantly translate signs, menus, or receipts simply by pointing my phone at the text. The Conversation Mode allows for real-time translation during a spoken exchange with locals. This app is a must-have in Japan, where there is not always an English menu, and many do not speak English outside of the major cities.

Description: A free cross-platform messaging and voice/video calling service that operates globally using internet connectivity.
Why I use it: The world’s dominant messaging app outside of the US. It allows me to text and call friends, family, and tour operators internationally using Wi-Fi or mobile data, bypassing expensive international texting fees. Note: it also works better across platforms for groups where there are both iPhone and Android users.

Description: A website and mobile app featuring user-generated reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants, attractions, and travel activities globally.
Why I use it: Tripadvisor remains the global authority for unbiased user reviews for accommodations, restaurants, attractions, and tours. While I book hotels using other apps, I do check the TripAdvisor reviews when booking accommodations. Also, it’s perfect for making on-the-spot decisions about what to see and do next and where to eat. While I have categorized TripAdvisor under Tours & Activities, this app does not neatly fit in a single category and should be on the short list for any travel toolkit.

Why I use it: I use this app for finding and booking curated excursions. A key feature is instant confirmation and mobile tickets, simplifying last-minute plans.

Why I use it: A massive marketplace for finding and booking tours, activities, and experiences. Viator has an enormous inventory and offers flexibility with 24-hour cancellation on most products, making it a great resource for booking tours in advance without being locked in.

Why I use it: While I use Tripadvisor globally, I rely on Yelp as the most accurate source for finding the best local, non-touristy food spots and quick services when I'm traveling domestically in the U.S. As a dedicated reviewer (and a Yelp Elite for over 10 years), I trust the community here, and being Elite offers perks like invitations to local events and parties, providing unique insight into local culinary scenes that a typical traveler wouldn't get.

Description: A high-end restaurant reservation network, particularly popular in major culinary centers, which provides access to coveted dining slots, often for a fee or via specific credit card integration (like Amex Platinum).
Why I use it: When traveling to foodie destinations like New York or London, Resy is essential for securing reservations at highly sought-after restaurants. It's often the only way to get a table at popular spots.

Description: A widely used online service for making instant dining reservations at thousands of restaurants worldwide, often accumulating loyalty points.
Why I use it: I use OpenTable as my reliable fallback, especially in areas where Resy doesn't have a presence. It has the widest coverage and is the easiest way to make last-minute dinner plans outside of major metropolitan areas.

Why I use it: When seeking an outdoor hiking adventure, this app is essential. It provides reliable information to help find the perfect trail with trail maps and elevation profiles.
🏞️ National Park Service
Category: U.S. Park Information (NEW)
Description: The official app for the U.S. National Park Service, providing interactive maps, tours, accessibility info, and historical details for over 400 national parks.
Why I use it: This app is indispensable when visiting U.S. parks. The maps and information are reliable and can be downloaded for offline use, which is necessary since cell service is rarely available in the parks. The app also provides information on accommodations in the park, visitor centers, things to do, ranger programs, and the info needed to make the best of a visit to any U.S. parks, monuments, or historical sites. Note: Even with the app, I highly recommend stopping in the Visitor Centers before your park visit, as the rangers can provide additional information not available in the app.

Description: A dedicated application for scuba divers to log their dives, track equipment use, and store dive-site information.
Why I use it: As an avid diver, this app is my digital logbook. It replaces messy paper logs and lets me easily track dive sites, depths, and bottom time. I also appreciate the stats that it calculates from the digital log, including the number of countries, unique dive sites, cumulative time underwater, and cumulative depth.
🌍 Places I’ve Been
Category: Travel Tracking & Inspiration
Description: A visual and organizational app designed to track all the geographic locations a user has visited, often presented on a customizable map.
Why I use it: It's a fun way to visually track global progress—keeping a running tally of all the countries, states, and cities visited to inspire the next destination.
💡Final Thoughts
Many of these apps have free and paid versions. My suggestion is to start using the free versions, and if you find the app valuable and want the additional features only available in the paid version, upgrade to the paid version at that time.
